Barack Obama Addressed SEIU Today

Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama addressed SEIU earlier today in an event viewed by all the members in Puerto Rico and streamed to thousands online. He spoke eloquently (of course) about the importance of organizing, the employee free choice act, and his experience with Pauline Beck and the walk a day in my shoes program. Watch the speech here:

SEIU Members Made the Difference for Donna Edwards

Many SEIU members live in Donna Edwards' district and worked long hours on her campaign. Hear about their experiences, and why they needed to get involved:

A National Movement for Healthcare Reform

This afternoon, we talked about affordable, quality healthcare for all, in a discussion led by Mary Kay Henry, an SEIU Executive Vice President. As a union of nurses and healthcare workers, we see first-hand how much we need national healthcare reform. See what these members had to say:

Anna Burger, Donna Edwards and U Maung Maung

Anna Burger, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer, brought the crowd to its feet on numerous occasions with a rousing speech that focused on the importance of organizing, political accountability, and the next President of the United States: Barack Obama.

"Working families haven't had this much at stake, or had such a clear choice, in a long time. The time is now to make the next Congress a workers' Congress. And the time is now to elect Barack Obama to become the next President of the United States."

The crowd rose to its feet.

Anna continued, "He is our candidate, because Barack Obama is one of us."

She also talked at length about political accountability and SEIU's Accountability Project. Check out some of the clips from her speech below.

Donna Edwards addresses SEIU in Puerto RicoOne of the best examples of SEIU's "Accountability Project" happened earlier this year in Maryland's Fourth Congressional District when SEIU-backed candidate Donna Edwards defeated incumbent Congressman Al Wynn.

The Washington Post called it an "unprecedented effort" on behalf of SEIU. Donna faces a special election in two weeks, and will then be sworn into office shortly after. She addressed the convention shortly after Anna Burger. Here's the last few minutes of her speech.

After the lunch break, the convention was treated to a speech by Chairman of the Board of the Burma Institute for Democracy and Development, U Maung Maung. He spoke passionately about life after Cyclone Nagris and the importance of organizing in a land controlled by military junta. The speech was warmly received by the convention and met with several ovations before, during and upon its conclusion. Watch it here:

SEIU Public Services Division Members Speak Out

Workers from SEIU's Public Services Division share their stories and challenges from many states facing budget shortfalls:

Andy Stern's Healthcare Pledge

Andy Stern just finished his speech before the convention.  Watch his closing pledge to the two million members of SEIU:

Madge Johnson
“I’m just one paycheck away from being homeless again. Something has gotta change in this country. And if we don’t do it, who’s gonna do it for us?”
Madge Johnson, not-yet-union public employee from Tennessee, United States

Raphael Marquez

“This plan will make a difference for workers like me at Sodexho. Because SEIU fought for a national agreement, management told us they’d be neutral when we said we wanted a union. It was hard to believe. Now I make $11.40 an hour and have the tools to mold my future.”
Raphael Marquez, UNITE-HERE/SEIU Local 2552, Illinois, United States

Linda Rouse Sutton

“Does size matter?  You bet it does.  Today we’re no longer a group of state employees in the South.  We’re part of something bigger that is uniting working people across the globe!”
Linda Rouse Sutton, a state employee from SEIU Local 2008 in North Carolina whose association voted to affiliate with SEIU just this May.

Harrison Bullard

“I feel a part of today’s civil rights movement.  That’s what this is about for me – winning for working people an passing it on to the next generation.”
Harrison Bullard, SEIU Local 26, Minnesota, United States

Louise Tarrant

"We are seeing a coming together of the labor movement in a way we’ve never seen before. Although we sit here from different countries on different continents, we talk about issues affecting workers and they are the same."
Louise Tarrant, National Secretary, Liquor, Hospitality, and Miscellaneous Union,
Australia
